Window shutters are solid coverings that commonly consist of top and bottom rails, side stiles, and louvers. They are used for privacy and to adjust the amount of light filtering through a room. Window shutters could be of the interior or the exterior kind.
Interior shutters, used on the inside of a building or house, hinge on either or both sides of a window opening and may have fixed or movable louvers. There are the traditional or colonial shutters; those with 1 ¼-in. Louvers, and the so-called plantation shutters with wider louvers.
Exterior shutters hinge to either side of a window and are mainly used for protection from small flying debris or severe weather.
